Therapy Provides Education, Understanding and a New Perspective

Therapy Can Help

If you’ve come to this website, its likely that you are currently experiencing a sense of being stuck in painful emotion, or perhaps a pattern of behavior that does not reflect how you want to live your life. The following are common reasons that clients come to see me:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship Difficulties
  • Stress
  • Coping with Life Changes
  • Anger

Therapy is helpful in several key ways. First, simply having a safe space to talk about what is going on can be very powerful in the healing process. Second, therapy helps you to gain new understanding about problems that may have previously seemed impossible to understand. Finally, therapy can provide concrete skills and tools that will help you to cope with life’s stresses in new and more effective ways.

Taking the First Step

Although you may feel ready to seek help, deciding to take the first step is often difficult. I am happy to answer any questions that you might have about therapy and what to expect. If you would like to contact me, we can talk about setting up an initial appointment. In the initial appointment, we will talk about what is bothering you and how therapy will address these problems.

Take the First Step

About Dr. Vaughn

Although I have spent most of my life in Austin, I completed my undergraduate degree at Tufts University in Boston, and received a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Texas. Following my time at UNT, I completed my formal training with an internship and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. I have worked in college and medical school counseling centers, addiction treatment centers, inpatient hospitals, and child and family outpatient centers. I have recently completed a 9 month training in the use of mindfulness and meditation for psychotherapy.

After returning to Austin, I have been in private practice since 2005. Over the course of my time working with clients, I have come to a much greater understanding of what leads to painful mental health problems, and what can help people get moving in a different, more satisfying direction. It is truly an honor to have the job of coming alongside someone who is suffering, and partnering with them in their journey toward relief.

Over the years I have been trained in many different approaches and techniques. I like to think of theses as “tools” in my toolbox. However, more recently I have come to view most problems from a Mindfulness based perspective. I help my clients become more aware of what is happening with thoughts, feelings, and behavior. I encourage my clients to practice awareness and teach them to use Mindfulness techniques, such as attention training, to observe more clearly what is happening on a moment to moment basis. As therapy progresses, my clients are able to step back, observe what is happening, and to make different and more skillful choices in their lives. I also value the use of self-compassion, which promotes a gentle, more accepting attitude toward our own selves.

I have a particular interest in and a great deal of experience working with anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, and depression. I also am able to provide Christian based counseling if requested.

I provide individual therapy for adults, ages 18 and up. The type and length of therapy will depend on your problems, goals, and other factors that we will likely discuss in our first meeting. I recommend starting with weekly meetings of 50 minutes. I also highly encourage clients to engage in homework assignments between meetings, which is optimal for progress toward goals.

In addition to therapy services, I see myself as an educator. Based on my training and experience working with many people, I have learned some important things about how we get stuck in problematic patterns. It is my goal to reach out to as many people as possible who might be suffering from anxiety, depression and other painful problems. Often, just learning more about a problem can provide some immediate relief. Please feel free to follow my blog to learn more.

In addition, I will be launching an internet based course on Mindfulness and how it can help with the problems I frequently see in my practice. You will learn how to tune into your body, the benefits of meditation, and being fully present in the moment. The course will include video instruction, guided meditations, and ways to connect with me for feedback and questions. This knowledge and the skills attached to it have benefited many of my clients in significant ways.

Fees and Insurance

My fee is $145 per 50 minute session. If you would like to use insurance, I accept Blue Cross/Blue Shield. However, if you are enrolled with Blue Cross through the State of Texas, please note that I am not in network. Also note that I am no longer accepting United or Tricare.

If you are wishing to use a different insurance, I would be considered an Out-of-Network provider. Depending on your benefits, your network may reimburse you for a percentage of the appointment fee. I will provide you with a statement that you can submit to your insurance. If you are not aware of your mental health benefits, I recommend that you call the number on the back of your insurance card for more information.

My office is located at 4425 South Mopac Expressway. You will see white stone buildings with green roofs on the access road turnaround after Best Buy. I am in building IV, which is to the right when you enter the complex. My office will be located on the first floor to your left. I share the office suite with Dr. Sam Adams.
